When you look at the scoreboards in ballparks that show all the other teams playing there is a number before both teams names. What is that number for?

Usually it's their pitchers number

The jersey number of the pitcher in the game. Scorecards usually have a complete list (somewhere) of all the pitchers and numbers for every team, so those at the ballpark can follow along.

I've never understood why this is so -- probably from the early days of numbers and nascent communications technology -- but it's a nice touch.

the number states which pitcher is pitching at the time. the number reflects the number on the jersey. If the game is over, its the winning pitcher against the losing pitcher for the game.
