Calvin is nice...not crazy about "Cal" as a nickname either. If you choose to use Calvin you could just stress to people that he will go by his full name "Calvin" and NOT by "Cal". My son's name is Jacob and NOBODY calls him "Jake"...it's Jacob. That's what I named him and that's what he goes by.

Good luck!!

No, I don't like it. And if you hate Cal, don't name your baby Calvin because rest assured he'll get called Cal. Even if you try to enforce the name Calvin, people will still probably shorten it.

Calvin is a nice name. People will call him Cal anyway.
They might tease him with Calvin & Hobbes, but there's always Calvin Klein :)

I hear Calvin and I think of the designer Calvin Klein. One good thing is that I don't know any Calvins. It is NOT overused which is a plus! Good luck :)

I love the name. It is a very formal name. I think as long as you tell everyone right off the bat that it is CALVIN and not cal, you shouldn't have a problem. I know someone who named her son Benjamen, and wont let anyone call him Ben. He is almost 4 now, and everyone knows that his name is not Ben...
It can be done. Be firm about your choose for your child. Its your call.

odds are, he would be called Cal by relatives or school friends. Or worse, he can pick up a knick name in school for any number of reasons....hmmm..... let's say he's an athlete and he plays a lot of basketball they might call him HOOPS.

I know a guy who is a lifeguard and in high school he played waterpolo and everyone calls him Shark. STILL DO! and he's nearly 50 years old!

point is: you can't control what people might do, in the way of nicknames... even your own child might change their name because they prefer it (I did). Choose what you like best and go with it. Don't worry about controlling how he will be addressed by others. Cuz you can't.
