No I'm not afraid of them. In fact I have learned some basic sign language just in case I run into a deaf person. I just never meet any.

No... I am not afraid of deaf people -- I'm an Audiologist!
Most of my patients where I work now are hearing impaired later in life, so they communicate verbally; very few are deaf and use American Sign Language. I even have a couple of patients that are deaf from birth or early childhood, but did not receive education for the deaf, so they never learned ASL or had specific aural/oral communication training.
Still, my sign skills are very poor, especially when trying to understand what another person is signing to me. So even though they may be patient with me, I get frustrated and embarrassed by my lack of skills despite having taken various courses and workshops over the years. I have also taken classes in other spoken languages and have found that I just am not very good with ANY languages at all -- my brain just can't process it all that quickly.
So to answer your question, people usually don't approach someone who is communicating in a language they don't understand -- whether it's ASL or an unfamiliar spoken language -- because the language barrier makes communication very difficult.

I think it is a shame for anyone to suddenly be nervous around someone because of a disability. I have a family member who is deaf without her hearing devices, and I worked for someone who was blind. First, I think it is a shame that someone would be worried about saying something that is imbarassing. Two things to remember. People with disabilities know they are disabled, and you can't catch it. So with that in mind, relax. They need friends too. I had a friend who was blind once. She experienced the fear other people had because they didn't want to say something ignorant or draw attention to her disability. Often people were worried about what to say to her. I finally told them that it was ok. You can't say the wrong the thing, bucause she already knows she is blind. You will not be telling her something she doesn't already know. This friend of mine laughed because she could feel the uneasiness of others, but couldn't quite place it. If you do say the wrong thing, apologise and go on. They can appreciate that.

Deaf people are totally normal people that can't hear. Most of them fit in fine and lead normal lives. I have an aquintance who is deaf and she has lots of friends. She is very popular.
...Although I work in a grocery store and had a deaf customer yell at me once and I do have to say that was pretty funny... but mostly because this lady's tongue looked like a little bird tongue wrigly around in her mouth while she yelled... not because she was deaf. Sorry, tehehe, just had to slip that in there.

You yourself got to have lots of patient to communicate with them.. Importance is you need to the the interest to learn sign lanuage.
My deaf and mute friends were not send to school so their sign lanuage is different from those who have gone to sign lanuage school..
Don't worry gina, they are also human being with feelings like us..

I have a friend who happens to be deaf and he HATES to be refered to as a "DEAF PERSON". That's not everything to him you know? You should really teach yourself to reword things like that. You're going to offend someone and it's not going to be pretty. They sound 'funny'? You need to really just shut your hole and think about how you say things. I'll bet you even find those who are deaf or handicapped in any way, ABNORMAL?...right?

My second wife is deaf. My first wife was also deaf.
My mother (it turns out) is about half-deaf and reads lips so perfectly you'd never know it (heck, I didn't know it!).
People are people regardless of whether they are blind, deaf, lame legged, black, white, fat or thin.
Labels mean nothing. Seek the person inside!

Some deaf people are very compassionate people and have the ability to spell very well when texting.
Don't take it personal.
