Bowel movements of breast fed babies vary from baby to baby. It is not unusual for a breast fed baby to have a poopy diaper each time he is fed. On the other extreme are breast fed babies who will only poop once a week. I have 4 children who were all breast fed as babies. My youngest pooped meconium in the hospital but did not poop again for 10 days. I thought I was a pretty experienced mom by this time, but it really freaked me out. I had her into the doctor 3 times to check for a bowel obstruction, but each time she was fine. How it was explained to me was breast milk is very digestible and often every bit of nutrient is used by the body with little waste except urine. I was assured that as long as she was eating every 2-3 hours and having enough wet diapers that the frequency of her poopy diapers was normal for her. Throughout her infancy and childhood, she continued to have bowel movements every few days. She will be 10 in July and still goes a day or two between. It is extremely rare for breast fed babies to get diarrhea. Yellow and possibly with seedy-looking things in breast fed baby poop is normal.

A one week old breastfed baby might poop after every feeding. Since they often eat every two hours, it wouldn't be unusual to have 12 dirty diapers a day. Crazy, huh?

But that stage passes pretty quickly.

Diarrhea is pretty obvious. But the change between the meconium (first black, tarry poops) and the seedy, mustardy poops of a newborn can be pretty nervewracking for a mom.

yellow and sort of "seedy" is exactly what breast milk poop looks like. Its definitely not solid. If it were diarrhea the poop on the diaper would have a "halo" of clearish liquid (excess fluids) around it. BF babies poop nearly every time they eat to only once or twice...it's all within normal. If you are really worried then definitely check with your pediatrician. But unless it's really copious, projectile or really fluidy then it's probably normal. Congratulations on your new baby!

5 to 8 times a day is normal. Its liquidy and is the color of mustard. Breast fed babies tend to have more bowel movements than bottle fed babies. Congrats!

They will poop 5-10 times in a day if you breastfeed and it should be a mustardy color grainy consistency and pretty runny.
