An aquaintance recently told me that if you have a note signed by your doctor saying that your pet helps promote your good health, apartments cannot discriminate against you in your application even if they are not pet-friendly. My mom also said she met a woman that lives in a non-pet-friendly apartment and has a small dog with the same paper. Does anyone know what this document might be called and how to go about finding it?

This is correct. I work for Choice Hotels, and even they have to take animals if the inhabitant has paperwork proving the pet is needed for health reasons. They even have small horses for this now, and monkeys too! The hotel HAS to let them in if they have the required paperwork. Apartments are going to be the same. You can contact the apartment, I bet you they will tell you the same though.

A ferret is the perfect pet for you. Ferrets make barely any noise(very low chattering noises when a ferret gets happy) Ferrets are litter box trainable. A ferret can be just as friendly as cat or dog if given consistent attention and handling. If you're gone most of the day at school, don't worry ferrets sleep an average of 20 hours a day and the other four is hyperactive playtime. A small apartment is enough space to make a ferret happy. And plus a ferret is more than likely to be neutered or spayed from any pet store you buy a ferret from. Some people complain about the smell, but if you give a bath at least once a month with the correct ferret shampoo it's hardly noticeable.

Yes this is true the pet would be called a "service animal" as long as you have a note or something from a doctor they cannot charge you pet fees or any type of pet rent because it would be against fair housing and you could sue the owner or the management company of the apt. complex. I have been working for apt. complexs for 2 years so I know all about that. A service animal is for the blind, depression, anixety kind of anything you can think of. Even if a complex is not pet friendly they still have to let you have the pet whether its a boxer great dane or a mini pony.

yes it is true but that note is pretty hard to get. a good friend of mine has a medical companion animal (cat ) for her hysterical seizures. the cat has brought her seizures down to less than 1 per month, when before she would have 3-4 a week. the only way your going to get that note is if you have some sort of mental or physical disorder that cannot be helped or controlled without a pet. like a helper monkey for quadrapeligics or a dog for a person with crippling anxiety disorders.

This is most typical for pets that are certified as companions for those needing physical assistance, such as guide dogs (aka seeing eye dogs), hearing ear dogs, or canine companions for independence. However, it is possible for people with mental or emotional problems to rely on a pet to assist them or calm them in stressful situations. I'd recommend that you do some research on the subject via the internet and prepare the necessary documentation before approaching your doctor with the request. If you need this pet for assistance, I'm sure that you will find someone who can certify the pet. However, if you truly do not need the pet for the above reasons, but want to take your pet with you, I'd recommend looking for a pet-friendly apartment.

I doubt a doctor will give you such a document. Plus, it would be lying and cheating to the apartment people which isn't very nice. It isn't difficult to find an apartment that allows dogs. Just put a little more effort into searching. When I was looking for an apartment here in Kentucky, a lot of them wouldn't allow me because I have a dog over 40 pounds. But, I went a little off the beaten trail and found a very nice place that allowed all breeds and sizes.

I have never heard of such a thing unless it was for a seeing eye dog or other "aide" type of pet. I am anxious to see what other answers you get!

EH! WErong.

Few doctors believe in that, and even fewer would sign a note stating such.

If you want to "find a document" like that, then you need to talk to your doctor.
