First of all, to anyone says that only a "professional" can check a cervix....that's ridiculous. Cervical observation is time-tested practice that women have been doing for centuries in observing their cycles.
So what is the cervix like when you are pregnant? The cervix becomes very tender and engorged with blood, especially early on in pregnancy. In the early stages of pregnancy it rises a bit and becomes softer, but the timing of this varies from woman to woman. You may see the change in your cervix shortly before your period is due or you may not feel this for several weeks. The cervix closes during pregnancy.
If you are not used to checking your cervix and don't know what it feels like when not pregnant, you might not be able to determine if you are pregnant by checking now.
You check it basically by inserting two fingers in and knowing what to feel for. Here's a quick "how to"

I personally would not try to examine your cervix yourself. I'd make an appointment asap, and have your ob/gyn check that out. I felt swelled up in my stomach region when I first found out that I was pregnant, though I had an extreme case of morning sickness that came along with it ( which was a pretty obvious answer ) but I would definately let the doc check that one out !
Best of Luck if you are trying to Concieve !

The difference between your hands up in there and a penis up in there is that your body is used to the frequent exposure of your partner's penis and it's natural bacterial flora, and your body has built up antibodies to those bacteria. Penises don't go around touching things all day long, picking up germs everywhere like your hands do. No amount of handwashing makes it safe - which is why sterile gloves are used by nurses/doctors/midwives when doing cervical exams.
Although giving yourself an infection is probably unlikely, shouldn't you do everything within your power to eliminate needless risks to your baby? Especially when the risk you are taking is not for a medical purpose, it is simply to satisfy your own curiosity?

Why do so many people ask this question? When you are pregnant it is closed, long and hard and points towards the back of your body (posterior). This is not an indication of pregnancy (you could just be shaped that way) and really only a doctor can determine if your cervix is the way that it should be for pregnancy.

"Anytime that you put your hand up there, you must WASH IT before and after..."
Not a bad idea, but it's not as though penises are normally sterile.
I'm not clear here -- if you didn't know what it was like before, what difference does it make now? It's no magical 'pregnant/not pregnant' indicator.
Like the one other poster above, I don't get the OMG DON'T TOUCH YOURSELF!! Doctors' hands are just as grubby or clean as one's own, kids.

You don't want some bacteria to get in there.
Leave it to the pros.

I think you should leave that to your doctor. I don't think you can examine yourself.
