Here's how I learned it. Stalagtites are on the top of the cave because they have to hold on TIGHT. Stalagmites are on the bottom because mites stay on the floor. The holding on tight and the mites have nothing to do with their position, but it's a good way to remember it.

Stalagmites grow up from the ground.
Stalactites grow down from the ceiling.
Just remember to associate the C with the C, and the G with the G, and you will never get it wrong!

Stalagmites: grow in a mound- see the m in the word?
Stalagtites: start growing at the top- like the t in that word.

I truly believe that you have one of your terms wrong.
Stalagmites are formed on the ground in a cave.
Stalacties are formed on the ceiling. An easy way to remember is the Stalagmites has a "g" in it, think ground. Stalacites has a "c" in it, think ceiling.

Stalagmites are the ones on the floor and stalactites are the ones on the ceiling. Think of it this way, Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling to keep from falling.

Stalagmites (note the letter "g") grow up from the ground; stalactites (note the letter "c") grow down from the ceiling. If you spell them properly, this is probably the best mnemonic.
