The bare essentials: A nasal aspirator, diapers (at least a pack), a box of wipes, onesies, a receiving blanket, a bottle & formula (if she's not breastfeeding), car seat.
You don't need toys.. a newborn can't even see them, let alone play with them. They don't teeth until about 3 months. My son is 9.5 months and just got a tooth yesterday... so a teething toy is not necessary.
A pacifier is only going to inhibit the babies ability to get used to eating and baby powder does more harm than good.

7-10 sleepers (suitable to the seasonal weather) or rompers
1 nice outfit
7-10 undershirts or onesies
1-2 packs of newborn diapers (don't overdo any one size of diaper until the baby's growth starts levelling off)
Wipes
12 bottles (if bottle-feeding)
Formula (if not using breastmilk)
or
A breast pump (if you'll be bfing & working)
Breastmilk storage bags
Breast pads (if breast or formula feeding)
6 or so receiving blankets
2-3 crib or bassinet sheets
crib or bassinet
Diaper bag
6 pairs of socks or booties
1 warm blanket
One small stuffed animal
A couple of small rattles
7 washcloths
2-3 hooded towels
Baby wash
Baby lotion
Diaper rash cream
Outdoor clothing (jackets, snowsuits) if weather requires
Lg. stroller/travel system (not an umbrella stroller)
Things that are nice to have
A bouncie chair
A playpen
A mobile
Small plastic unbreakable mirror
Floor gym/playmat
Large blanket for tummy time
Some kind of sling or baby carrier
Waterproof mattress covers
Baby bath
A rack for drying sanitized bottles
An insulated bag for transporting prepared bottles w/coldpack
If you forget everything else, remember that the hospital will not let you take your baby home unless you have a rear-facing infant seat. Unless perhaps you're planning on walking.
If you can, pick up "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and/or "What to Expect in the First Year." These books are great for just this kind of information.
Also, sign up at babycenter.com, which also has a lot of resources for new and current parents.

You cannot have too many baby washcloths. They are invaluable things, can be diaper wipes, drool catchers, in a pinch bibs, etcetera.
A bag of cotton balls & box of q-tips ( for stump and initial bathing - you don't need alcohol, just water).
2 swaddle blanket (wonderful things). I usually ended up using just one but it's not something you want to be needing and it's dirty from a diaper leak or whatever.
Socks are kind of a bust sometimes, mine would not keep them on from day one. Nor the little mittens. So I would start with just a couple of pairs and see if your child wants them or not.
Little hats, the plain cotton ones are best. They are really necessary for little ones but you'll kind of go through them after a while. So maybe 3-4 of them, just so you have extra to grab.
Plain onesies or side-shirts, about 12. I know this sounds like a lot but once you get the child home you will understand. Diaper leaks, spit-up, drool, etcetera will mean you change the child a lot. The little cute outfits are fine to have, but for the daily grind you cannot beat plain cotton.
Cloth diapers, even if you aren't planning on cloth diapering. World's best burp cloth, spill absorber, lap pad, etcetera. If you are planning on cloth diapering they sell colorful patterned ones so you can keep your "other use" ones separate from those used as diapers.
At least 2 vinyl backed "crib pads" for general use.
I would have gone insane without my snugli (baby carrier) but I don't know that it's a "necessity."
Car seat!!! Convertibles are fine, but if you get a convertible car seat then you'll probably want the little neck roll supports for a while too. Still cheaper than 2 different car seats. :)

well you'll average around 10 diapers a day so you'll need plenty of diapers, if you plan on formula feeding then thats an average of $30/week, bottles(5-7), if you breast feed obviously cheaper. You'll need a car seat(at least1), crib(at least a bassinet), changing table(if you want), baby wash cloths/baby towels (5), at least 7 onesies depends on how often baby spits up and how often you want to do laundry, thats the same for other things as well it jsut depends how often u want to do laundry, gowns (5), side snap undershirts(at least 5), booties/socks( at least 4-5 each), sweaters(3), hats( at least 5), footy pajamas (at least 4-5), or swaddling blankets(3), plenty of recieving blankets I would say at least 5 (you can buy them in packs of 5/6), if you have a crib, you'll need crib sheets(good to have 4-6), waterproof mattress pads(2-3), thermometer, nasal aspirator, pacifiers (at least 2) if you plan on using them, baby bath tub(good to use when they are really small its harder to bath them), wipes (stock up!), baby powder/ointment (1 of each), baby shampoo(at least 1)..... thats all necessities I think that you would need say for the first week other things are needed but you can probably go a week without.......................

It might seem obvious, but you can't leave the hospital without a child seat......
Start with a few different brands of things, and see what you and baby like best.
You will obviously need diapers, clothes, sleepers and bedding.
I always buy these for new moms:
-A package of CLOTH diapers (they make the best spit rags)
-A lingerie bag--keeps tiny socks and mittens from getting eaten by the dryer.
-Baby hangers
-Baby soap and lotion for SENSITIVE skin, never know how baby will react to chemicals.
-A REAL bath towel, they baby ones are cute, but not really absorbant.
-A small laundry basket for baby's wash-nice to keep it separate.
-Mylicon gas drops
-Baby nail clippers, those tiny nails things are like knives!
ENJOY!!

I can honestly say that it's different for everyone. What is too much for one person isn't enough for someone else!
How do you figure baby powder is bad? Heck I even use it, I've never had a bit of trouble and my child has never once had diaper rash. Although I recommend the corn starch powder.

i might say a sort of vehicle-seats that could additionally hook right into a stroller. that way she gets diverse makes use of out of it. additionally if she already has a sort of there's a sling which you will get that holds the toddler in it and it additionally can cover her if she is feeding. you additionally can get greater sheets for the crib and gentle blankets. she would be able to additionally in no way have adequate onesies. you besides could might wait a pair of days rather of attempting to think of of what she is going to prefer and in basic terms be thereto help her pass to the save while she realizes that she desires something.
