No. In fact, to know the other, you must FIRST understand yourself, for in order to have clear empathy with another, you must have a clear concept of yourself, the concept to which the other is compared. All you need to keep in mind is that a relationship isn't about "them" and it isn't about "me", it is about "us". Meditation helps with pinning down subtler qualities, I would suggest taking up a practice of breath meditation in whatever religious encapsulation you choose. Good luck!

A relationship is coexistence of two entities. So to say goodbye to one no longer constitutes a relationship. In a relationship it is necessary to share oneself.

I think you must first know and accept the self, but be willing to combine your being with the other. The point at which you connect with the other, is the point at which we truly become human. I enjoyed reading Levinas take on this point of inter connectivity as an undergrad. I like the thought that there is no malice or evil in this initial connection, only naive purity and acknowledgment of the other.

In my opinion, it is not true.
To attempt to know another by abandoning self is to
take up the occupation of mind-reader. It is almost
always more efficient to know things within a self
context, and in those cases when it is not more
efficient it is better to admit that the self does not
know.

Know the truth of your self before you seek knowledge of the other; then you see the other in whole truth, not merely the object you seek but human essence and their difference.
