You can start with the reference to try a little to understand it. It's not a simple concept. It's the distance light would travel during the Planck time, the minimum time quantum. In principle, there is no way to measure any distance smaller than that.

The distance is not zero. It does take some time for light to cover the distance. It's not instantaneous.
