Being careful not to over feed will help, but you will still have to do water changes to keep the tank clean and the fish healthy.

As many others have said you need to feed him next to nothing there is a reason you hardly ever see them eat :) . And if your having trouble keeping it clean you most likely are over feeding because bettas alone dont pollute the tank much.

Feed him only once a day with 3 pellets, put in a real plant, don't put the bowl in direct sunlight and use the waterconditioner especially made for betas
good luck

I change my water only about every other week, 25% of it

Put some store bought rocks in the bottom of the tank so the extra food has a place to settle and don't feed him to much.

Make sure you don't feed him to much food other wise it will cloud upp his bowl. Even then you will still have to clean his bowl no longer than 2 weeks.

A filter will help, but you still need to do water changes.
