My granpa is a widowed 92 year old man who liked to lead a simple lifestyle with his girlfriend of 14 years. His main source of fun used to be puttering around at the local casino spending something like $50 a visit. He doesn't need much is what he says. What would be a good gift idea to give him at his old folks home, outside of clothes and food, which he always has plenty of.

He has no major health problems aside from saying he is gradually getting weaker, a natural thing for a man his age.

thanks

If he is still active enough to enjoy it do an afternoon 'cream tea' party at the residential home. Ask the home to provide the tea, Pop table cloths on, a few balloons then add some mini vases of wild flowers on the table. Invite some of his friends/co-residents. You wont need to provide much food, a really good variety of cream cakes will go down a treat; cream scones, eclairs, vanilla slices and strawberry tarts.

It would be nice if you are allowed to put some old time tunes on and can decorate the room with photos of him when he was younger and his family/friends.

If he is mainly sedentary get him luxury versions of foods or things he uses every day. Such as a really good quality moisturizing soap, shaving gels and after shave. Or a really soft comfortable throw for his bed or lap, such as mohair.

A lot more visits from his family.

Really, he DOESN'T need any material THINGS at his age. He has his clothes and his food and his girlfriend. But he lives in an old folks home, and a lot of those residents can be boring.

He needs the stimulation of his family's visits to refresh him.

There is probably no greater gift that he could receive.

Don't know what state he lives in,but get him a bunch of "instant scratch" lottery tickets since he likes the thrill of gambling. Then offer to come and go over his scratched tickets-you usually need to double check some of the tickets especially the bingo-type.It would be a double present for him,the tickets and then looking forward to you coming to look at them.If you really wanted to stretch the idea, you could offer to cash in any winners for more tickets and keep the ball rolling.

I recently saw an add on TV about music back in the 50s It probably had 50 songs on CDs. To me that would be one of the greatest gifts ever. Also you can buy CDs with all kinds of stories on them. Just find out what kind of stories he likes.

How about a gift card to a nice restaurant or to the movies. Or tickets to a play or concert. Or come visit and take him and his girlfriend out. They would both probably like that.

listen to his stories and have them on tape. this way his stories will be a gift for the entire family. every time some one visits have Grandpa tell a story or two along with the conversation. label and keep the tapes as the stories will be enjoyed for years to come. have stories about his childhood, family stories, war experiences, everyday life, etc.

The greatest gift you can give him is your time. Sit and ask him questions about when he was young, how he met your grandmother, etc. Someone his age has seen and lived through so much. They are a walking history book and when they are gone, all chances of info they can give you are gone. I, many times regret that I had not sat and talked with my grandparents and asked questions I now wonder about.

Try to get the family together to have his birthday with him. As you get up there in the years like your Grandfather nothing would mean more. Have everyone write down memories of your G-father and read them aloud to him. Then leave them there to peruse later. Also do a family portrait. It will make him feel good to know that he was thought of in such a way and that his life wasn't wasted. Then he'll have the portrait to remember everyone when he feels lonely.
