Is there any way short of just running out of propane to tell how much propane is left in the bottle and how much does a second bottle run to keep in reserve?

the way to find out how much propane in a bottle is: boil a pot of hot water and when the water gets to a boiling point pour the hot water onto the tank you will see a light frost on the tank and that will tell you how much propane is in a tank. a second bottle in price depends on who you choose to buy it from. usually ranges from $29-$49. my husband used to deliver propane so i asked him. any questions feel free to e-mail me.

propane is under pressure and therefore is colder than the air. Pour hot water on the side of the tank while it is standing disconnected. twhen the water evaporates, the side of the tank should show some frost when there is propane, but nothing above that. You can also spend a buck or 2 and get a sticker to put on the side of the tank that acts the same way and shows you where your level is at

There are products on the market that will let you know the level of the propane inside the tank and you might keep a second full tank on standby and just swich over the tanks.

Usually as you use propane the tank will get frosty or condensed with moisture up to the level of the gas that is left.

Several companies make level gauges for them, they even sell them at home depot. Myself, I just keep a spare handy ($45) and pick up the suspect tank and shake it side to side. After a while you will get a feel for what's inside.

Whatever you do - don't buy one at a garage sale. Lowes home improvement center has them for around $20 filled. You exchange them each time. There are gages you can put on them - the gas makes the can cold when you are using it - put your hand on the side to feel the level.
