My water heater tank cracked and needs replaced. A new hydro unit is approx 1800.00. Can the system be converted to a regular gas water heater and a separate heat pump? What cost could I expect?

If the air handler is in good shape, you can replace the heat exchanger with an indoor coil and put a condensing unit outside. Call a few heating/cooling specialists in your area and request a quote.
Look into a tankless water heater for your domestic water.
If you can live without A/C, go with a gas furnace, much more economical to run than a heat pump.

It shouldn't be a problem converting the system over to a gas storage tank type hot water system. but do you really need a circulation pump for the system ? a heat pump is for a domestic heating system. the only use on a hot water tank is to keep the water in the lines hot when the faucet is open. the cost is according to the size tank you will need for the unit it is being used for.
