LCD or DLP is better. Plasma's are not recommended because you can actually burn in a ghost image of certain parts of the screen that do not change like scores in the corners.
Scroll down to the "screen burn" section at the bottom of my link below.

It's down to personal prefferance, but i'll share what i know.
Most of this will be based on how much money you have to spend on these and how much room you have.
With LCD the Picture is much sharper than plasma.
But Plasma has more colour and makes the picture stand out a lot more LCD tends to be more dark.
It will also depend on the connections you have.
S-Video - Just use the standard TV you have.
Compostie - Also use the standard TV you have
both of these will provide little difference even if you have an awesome TV.
Component and HDMI - These are the best and you should go for the HDMI if you have a choice otherwise go for the Component. These cable will best use the capabilities of a high end TV and look good on either of them.
I have an LCD with HDMI and it looks great.

While it's subject to debate, modern LCD screens are typically better than plasma.
LCD's are immune to burn-in, which plasma screens are not... however, this may not be much of an issue since burn-in usually requires a stationary image to be left on the screen for days or weeks.
You'll want to avoid the "bargain basement" LCD's since they usually have a slower refresh time & can cause ghosting (undesired bluring when an item is moving faster than the screen's ability to update). Since most games run at 60 fps, you'll want to an LCD screen that has a refresh time of 15 milliseconds (ms) or less for best results.
