To determine the number of trout in a lake, a conservationist catches 151 trout, tags them and throws them back into the lake. Later, 52 trout are caught; 13 of them are tagged. How are in the lake?

Since 13 * 4 = 52, you can assume that 151* 4 or 604 are in the lake, but that is just an assumption, not a fact.

Hoping that the ratio of trout caught to tagged trout caught is representative of the ratio of total fish to total tagged,
x/151 = 52/13
x = 4*151
x = 604
