There seems to be a lot of anti-Chavez sentiment. Obviously, the US coporations and politicians in power hate him because he constantly attacks them in the media and spoils their aggressive foreign policy in South America. But what do regular Americans think? Do they even know anything about him and his socialist policies, or do they just get brain-washed into mindlessly hating Chavez due to the biased media in the USA? (I'm not an American, by the way, so I was just wondering.)

Thanks for the answers, but can I at least have ONE CLEAR REASON to back up your views? If you do or don't like Chavez, why or why not? So far, most of the answers are blind opinions of people who never met the guy, never heard him speak, never read anything objective on the guy. Seems like everyone just heard a few minutes about him from a biased media source that hates him.

To john-stolworthy: Thanks! That's the most objective view I have read. And which book was that by Chavez? I think our unenlightened readers might need some info on the other side of Chavez, not the hate-filled rhetoric spewed against him by business leaders whose profits and lifestyle are threatened by his "socialist" policies.

He is who he is. I like the fact that, of all the "friends" we have in the world, a man who our leader thinks is a tyrant offers us the most assistance - first to offer relief for Katrina, low cost heating oil, etc. I have read his book and found it interesting. I don't believe his policies would work here in the US, but they seem to be working in Venezuela.

Sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I disagree.

Edit: The book is called "Understanding the Venezuelan Revolution"

Well there is a lot of propaganda that he is bad. I do know that the oil companies working down there didn't want to pay fair royalties to the people of Venezuela and that was a sore point. Also we hear he is shutting down freedom of speech, which is not good. I can see how the people of Central and South America can be tired of the USA meddleing down there. I guess the jury is out right now, but whether you support him or not remember that liberty and freedom are big treasures and we should all work for it.

The guy is one step below Saddam and so are all his socialist ideas. The guy is a loser and will take the same road as Castro an alienate his country. No kidding? You're not an American, gee I would never have guessed!

Most are somewhat aware of his policies. I find him to be a dictator, some of the things he's done lately are pretty creepy (i.e. failing to renew a rival media outlet's license).
