Let x = ( sqrt(125) - sqrt(10) ) / sqrt(5)
Multiply top and bottom by sqrt(5):
x = sqrt(5)( ( sqrt(125) - sqrt(10) ) / 5
Multiply out the brackets:
x = ( sqrt(5)sqrt(125) - sqrt(5)sqrt(10) ) / 5
Use sqrt(a)sqrt(b) = sqrt(ab):
x = ( sqrt(625) - sqrt(5)sqrt(5)sqrt(2) ) / 5
x = ( 25 - 5sqrt(2) ) / 5
x = 5 - sqrt(2).

hi there...

so your question looks sqrt(125) - sqrt(10 / sqrt(5)

there are two things going on here...
the first thing is to remove the radicals (square root sign) out of the denominator - called rationalizing the denominator

and the other thing is to simplify , if possible, anything in the sqrt sign...

looking at sqrt(125), you'll see that 125 = 25 * 5 and 25 is perfect square so, you can rewrite that as 5sqrt(5)...

so the expression looks like 5sqrt(5) - sqrt(10) / sqrt(5)

now rationalize the denominator by multiplying the denominator and numerator by sqrt(5), the reason this works is that sqrt(5) * sqrt(5) = sqrt(25), a perfect square! which is 5

so the expression becomes 5*sqrt(5)*sqrt(5) - sqrt(10)*sqrt(5) / sqrt(5) * sqrt(5)...

simplified it is 25 - sqrt(50) / 5

also notice that sqrt(50) = sqrt(25 * 2) which becomes 5sqrt(2)

now the expression is 25 - 5sqrt(2) / 5
also notice that there is a common factor of 5 in every term, so you can factor that out and the expression becomes...

5 - sqrt(2) / 1 or 5 - sqrt(2).

Hope this helps...

Cheers,
Mark

Break down √10 into √5x2, then the √5 for the numerator and denominator cancels each other out. You'll left with:

√125 - √2 = 5√5 - √2 or 9.77

If you don't have square root symbol, use parenthesis enclosing the number with a power 1/2.

example, square root of 2 can be written as (2)^1/2.
