Can you watch an R-rated movie? Do you HAVE to have a picture ID, or would a permit work just fine? Thanks.

The family member is my twenty-four-year old sister. It still wouldn't matter, right?

I'm sure you can. They'll let pre-teen children into R-rated movies if they're with their parents. Besides, the R age limit is 17 anyway, not 18, so you should technically be able to see R-rated movies on your own.

Update: they don't check if it's really your parents who you're with. At most theaters, they only ID the one person who actually buys the tickets -- if they ID anyone at all. If that person is over 17, then it's fine whoever they bring in with them. At any rate, the movie ratings system is only a guideline, not the law. The only way anyone underage can be arrested or punished for seeing an R-rated movie is if they had sneaked in without even buying a ticket.

Yes you can. You would not need ID. The adult might if asked but R means under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
