Pretty much 99% of the population calls this music "techno". It is called electronica. How did this become? Techno is a subcategory of Electronica.

Rock is a category that has subcategories of Alternative, Classic, Indie, etc. Why don't people call all rock music classic rock?

And, for the same reason trance gets called techno.

"Techno" basically describes all electronic music and dance music which can include dance, electronica, house, trance, happy hardcore, etc.

People who don't really listen to trance, house, happy hardcore, etc, will call it "techno". It's just a general label and nothing more.

It's the same with all kinds of music. My fiance listens to rap and I call it "rap" but he would tell me "it's not rap it's old school". Okay...whatever, sounds like "rap" to me. But someone who listens to rap would say differently.

It's also the same with rock or heavy metal. There are SEVERAL subcategories. "Rock" and "heavy metal" are just general labels.

It might be a little aggravating or irritating when someone calls it "techno" but don't let it get to you. Just inform them that there are several subcategories just like any genre of music and that you like to listen to electronica with is a subcategory.
