A very talented, but also very misguided filmmaker.

I have not read the book so I can't help you there.
Her work was magnificent, particularly "Triumph of the Will." Unfortunately, she only worked for one guy, and he was a murderous psychopath.
Although she denounced Hitler in her '90's - I don't think she meant it. She worshipped him, as did many others, warped as that seems to us.
Had she been free to use her talent in another country or arena - we'll never know what wonders she could have provided.

She was a Nazi equivalent of Sergei Eisenstein in Communist Russia. Both were totalitarian propagandists.
