Around 1040, the first known movable type system was created in China by Bi Sheng out of baked clay. Metal movable type was first invented in Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty (around 1230).

Block printing and movable type printing was known in Eastern Asia long before it was known in Europe. The discussion is if Gutenberg and others in Europe had been influenced by information from China, Korea or Japan. It could have been two independent parallel developments.
