Which kind of box turtle?
American Box Turtles (Terrepena species- Eastern Box, Three-toed Box, Floridian Box, Ornate or Western box, etc.) are land turtles that require dry land and a small soaking dish of fresh water.
Other than the Ornate or Western Box, the rest of them like moderate temps (70's) and high humidity for good health in captivity.
The Asian Box Turtles (Cuora species) are a more mixed group. Some of these are almost totally land turtles, some are almost totally aquatic, most are in-between. They need fresh water as well.

Box turtles are freshwater. They only require freshwater. The salt water does not do anyhting for them.

Depends on what you call a "small tank". What are the measurements exactly? For a 10-15 gallon tank, you can do a juvenile leopard gecko (and upgrade to a 20 gallon long before it reaches adult size), crested gecko (15 gallon tall tank), firebellied toads/newts (not together), reed frogs, male guppies, white cloud minnows, cherry shrimp, micro gecko, small day gecko, gargoyle gecko (15 gallon tall tank). I would NOT recommend turtles, as none of them will be able to live comfortably in a 15 gallon tank or less.

Freshwater. They live on the land most of the time, but they like to get into water every now and then.

fresh water but don't stick the turtle in a fish tank b/c a box turtle is a land roamer so just stick a lid such as a coffee can lid or a butter tub lid filled with water in a box so they or it can get a drink PS they eat lettuce or green vegetables

Actually they are not really aquatic. They will soak in water, but are more land animals. They soak in freshwater and need fresh water always available

Fresh water thier a river subject try and get rain water or river water. You'll have to watch out for mosquito's breeding in the water. Any water. Thers a pestiside for that that won't harm the turtle

Box turtles can NOT swim! They need a dish of water to soak/drink but should be kept in topsoil, coconut coir (bed a beast) or slightly damp peat moss. To answer your question...Fresh water. :)
