The yeast power it. As they produce the CO2, it changes the pressure of the gasses within the bottle and as the CO2 is released, the additional pressure forces some of the gas out the tube.

To give you an idea of how much gas this releases, have you ever seen bread being made from scratch? You mix the dough and the yeast acts on the sugars in it and cause the dough to "rise" from the CO2 released. Same thing.

Here's a website with other designs and more explanation: http://www.qsl.net/w2wdx/aquaria/diyco2.html

that bottle thing. i guess it is powered by heat (room tempurature heat. you have to keep it warm)

because yeast is a living organism, it emits CO2 and other things (alcohol is one of them) when the yeast eat the suger they produce co2 and alcohol. the bubbles will rise and go through the tube and werever you need it. it will be a constant flow, but i would add glucose and warm water to give the process a kick start. and you will have to keep adding suger (to keep the reaction going and the yeast alive) or change the solution once in a while. (this is also how alcohol is produced. people usually add fruit. but it may be illigal were you are)
