I need to edit my html code in MS Publisher for my web site and it doesn't seem to keep the changes I make in Notepad once I save it as an html file in MS Publisher. Does anyone know what I can do to overcome this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Is there a free software program that I can download for creating a web site but that works like a publishing program and not like a word processing program? I hate the word processing format as I don't have the freedom to move images and text around where I want them to be like I can in a publishing format.

I agree with the above comments about Publisher.
If you want a free and quality html web site builder, then check out either Nvu at:

or try Mozilla Composer which is part of the Mozilla suite.

Unfortunately using Publisher for creating web pages doesn't work very well at all, as you're now finding out.

Publisher is a desktop publishing package that has had HTML creation tacked on to it, a bit like a hammer that has had a screwdriver added to it. Yes it will work, kind of, but it's definitely not the best tool for the job!

I'm a professional web designer and have had to take a few web sites created in Publisher and turn them into "proper" sites. It was very time consuming but the resultant pages were much smaller because I was able to strip out all of the extra code that Publisher adds to the pages it creates, while still retaining the look of the original pages.

My advice is to use proper web design tools. If you want to stick to WYSIWYG tools then Dreamweaver is great (but expensive), FrontPage is better than Publisher but not really recommended. See http://www.thefreecountry.com/webmaster/htmleditors.shtml for lots of free software.

Well if I had a boss that built a website and wanted me to take it over I know it would mean that I would be redesigning it as well as maintaining it. I would not be concerned with price of the software either as he will write it off as a business expense anyhow. After all the web is the cheapest form of advertising available. I would recommend you get a copy of Dreamweaver and stay as far away from frontpage as you can. Dreamweaver will write code that is far closer to compliant with the international standards then frontpage. I wold also be sure to test the pages in multiple browsers as well as multiple versions of the same browser prior to releasing it to public view. You really don't need the latest version of Dreamweaver but you should get at least version 8 of the program. You will also want to learn (x)HTML, CSS, JavaScript and possibly MySQL, PHP or Flash. If the boss complains about the cost of Dreamweaver you can show him the Macromedia Studios or even the Adobe Studios as buying the studios while they are more expensive as a one time price you can save hundreds of dollars off the individual pricing. Another consideration would be that him purchasing the tools you will need to do a professional job for him is actually saving him the money it would cost to hire a professional web designer / developer to fulfill his web needs.

Don't use publisher for making web pages. It is HORRIBLE at converting to HTML. Get frontpage, or another program designed for html. I tried making my web pages in publisher, and I had to go through and change all the code myself.
