The US entered WWI after growing tensions against the Powers reached a climax (especially Germany). The germans had bombed a passenger ship called Lusitania killing many americans, along with other US merchant ships. Though the germans promised to stop, the UK intercepted a telegram -the Zimmerman Telegram- that was basically asking Mexico to join the war in return for help retrieving territory from the US. This enraged US citizens, and they called for war.
I disagree with the other answers here -the treaty of Ghent came much later, and at the time of WWI the US had a policy of isolationism. Alot of people don't know about the Zimmerman Telegram -its really what got us mad

The immediate Causes of World War II are generally held to be the German invasion of Poland, and the Japanese attacks on China, the United States, and the British and Dutch colonies. In each of these situations, the attacks were the result of a decision made by authoritarian ruling elites in Germany and Japan. World War II started after these aggressive actions were met with an official declaration of war or armed resistance.

Pressure from the military industrial complex of the U.S. mostly the major arms manufactures. These large bussinesses forced Wilson to end our policy of neutrality and isolationism. German U boat attacks on shipping and passenger liners also helped to raise public anger at the Germans

Because England was officially in the war and the U.S. is bound to support England in a war by virtue of the Treaty of Ghent (concordance of Ghent) and you can look that treaty up on the internet and it will explain everything.
