It's normal. it's called a twilight state, and usually occurs just before falling asleep. May also occur just before awakening.

You are in the early stages of sleep. Stage I or 2. There 4 stages of sleep. Stage 1 your brain is active and you can still hear what's going on around you. Stage II slows the body more can cause the "numbness" or sleep paralysis. Stages III and IIII are the deepest stages of sleep. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep (the stage where you dream) is between Stage I and II after you cycled through deep sleep. If you're concerned about it...see a doctor that specializes in sleep disorders and have a sleep study done. Hope this helps!

Its called sleep paralysis. Look it up on wikipedia. Heres a lil snippet from wikipedia. Sleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis of the body shortly after waking up (known as hypnopompic paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep (known as hypnagogic paralysis). Physiologically, it is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations. Ive had em, dont worry.

I don't know what causes this, but I'm sure that if you're sleeping like that all night, you're not getting any good, restorative sleep. It's worth a trip to the doctor.

I get the same thing...it's like your paralyzed for a few seconds. It's when your body is asleep and your mind is awake. It happens to a lot of people.

Perhaps it's sleep paralysis? This link gives some information:

I sometimes get it, but it's when I'm starting to wake up from a deep sleep.

probably cos you are too worried or aware about your surroundings at particular moments, which is probably why even though you might want to sleep, you cannot. Also, I would guess that you dont believe people very easily,
