The junk lawn is a mix of weedy grass I don't like. Right now its practically dead because of little rain fall, though it always comes back after some rain.

A landscaping buddy suggested I kill it (with herbicide), rototill it, wait a couple of weeks, kill it again (more herbicide) and till some top soil into it, then replanting sawd (sp?)

Another other suggestions?

Here is a link for establishing a Zoysia grass lawn. Unless you live in an area with very cold winters it is a great choice and impossible to ruin with neglect.

Funny you asked this question. About three years ago I killed my whole back yard 2000sq.ft. I mistakenly hooked the hose up to a new bottle of roundup weed killer. I thought I bought weed-be-gone(kills only weeds not grass). Get a dispenser bottle of (ROUND--UP) that you can hook up to your garden hose. Kill all the grass you have. Wait it is completely dead. Get sod or patches of the kind of grass you want to plant. Don't worry about tilling or turning over the ground first. The dead grass will serve as mulch, which is good for the ground. The ROUND--UP will not hurt the ground, as will most herbicides. Depending on how big your yard is and the amount of patches of grass you transplant will determine how long it will take before you have a nice lawn. But remember, keep the yard saturated with water for the first two weeks, this gives the roots a chance to take hold.
To keep your lawan nice and weed free, use (WEED --BE--GONE) about twice every two weeks. It only effects wide leaf plants and does NOT harm your grass.
