It could be an ear infection. Some babies will pull at their ears when they start teething.

Scratching may mean that the skin is irritated back there, maybe not washed well enough. It could mean washed and made dry skin. Usually when children tug on their ears it is a sign of an ear infection so you may want to consider that also and see the pediatrician

My 5 month old scratches behind her ears when she's tired. Everyone thought it was an ear infection but I took her to the doctor and she's fine.

could be an infection--symptoms would be crankiness, fever, loss of appetite, and pain (cries if you touch or rub her ears)--call your pediatrician if you're concerned.
however, the same symptoms point to teething. if the baby's teething, you can look for loose stools, and a rash (tiny red dots all aound the mouth) and excess drooling. ask your doc about using baby orajel, or the natural remedy of rubbing a q-tip dipped in vanilla extract on baby's gums.
however, if none of these symptoms are present, take a deep breath and smile, your baby has discovered its ears and is wondering just what exactly those things are that he or she is feeling. just keep their nails trimmed to prevent cuts and enjoy these sweet times. they go by too quickly.

How old is the baby? It could be that they have now discovered that they HAVE ears! My daughter went through this- doctor after doctor could not find anything- it may appear they are scratching(keep nails cut) when in reality they are just checking them out!

Are you sure it's scratching? I could mean that the baby has an inner ear infection (very common in infants), or...some babies do that when they're tired.
