First of all I'd like to point out that I'm not criticising anyone who defends them.
I just want to know your honest opinion.
If something else had happened to Madeleine, or her brother or sister, like say she got out of bed, wondered off to the pool and drowned, would you still defend them? They would still be suffering wouldn't they?
Just because someone else had something to do with what happened to her doesn't mean that they weren't at fault.

babysham, I agree.
And before anyone starts saying 'How is this helping?' Well its not, it doesn't have to. I'm just asking for opinions.
Also before anyone replies saying how boring this subject is, I think its obvious in the title what this question is about. Just don't bother replying.

miss.a.right, I can see your point there. But I see many people here defending them as if they did nothing wrong!
I do know that accidents happen even when we're paying attention, but I can hardly see this as an accident. She was deliberately left on her own.
And I'm sure no one really means to vilify the Mccanns, they just can't stand the fact that they made a huge mistake and won't accept that as a fact. They act like millions of people would do the same they did.

Sprinkle, Of course, if anyone who defends them shares their views. So far it seems they are a bit shy.
I am not looking for answers telling me how right I am, my opinion is that I am right, otherwise I wouldn't post this question.

Nice point Liadan...
Um...there a difference between defending (when you justify what the perpetrator did...which i don't see many people do for the McCanns) and not knocking the guilty (i repeat, guilty) when they're down. Madeleine's parents are guilty of leaving their babies unattended. Theres no defending them on that. But hounding their every consequent (i repeat, consequent) action, reaction, expression & gesture is cruel. Judge them for their crime but don't tear them to pieces & belittle them while they try to right their wrong & worse, don't read sinister motives into their every breath based on superficial info got from the media.

I agree totally with what you have written. I've also noticed that one or two answers are focusing on the fact that the parents might come from a safe area and have no idea of the bad people out there.
That is NOT the issue.
Whether Madeleine was abducted or not, even if she had remained in the room all night, ANYTHING could've happened to any one of those children resulting in serious harm.
I have 4 children, and as babies you could put them to bed seemingly perfectly well, and through the night they could wake vomiting, or climb out of the cot or have any number of accidents - THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T LEAVE BABIES ALONE, not because you didn't think an abducter would come in and take them.
Poor Madeleine, my heart aches for her. Her parents invited the opportunity for harm. In this instance Madeleine has either been abducted or left the apartment herself, either way, you can be pretty sure the poor baby has come to harm.
The parents left these vulnerable children. I really wouldn't want to be in their shoes, but it is their own fault and that needs to be acknowledged.

I agree.
There are two separate issues here.
1. The terrible tragedy for their child most probably being taking away by a pervert. This person needs to be caught and punished and locked away forever. This person is sick and a danger and the focus needs to be on that until the situation is resolved.
However:-
2. The parents neglected their duty of looking after their children and still appear to think its ok to leave babies alone. They also covered up the fact that they did not check their kids regularly, left apartment unlocked and refuse to acknowledge any aspect of their care was at fault. Obviously they feel very guilty about this aspect so don't want to discuss it.
I feel for the McCanns - I am not anti-McCann and I dont beleive they had anything to do with disappearance. But I do feel quite strongly that they are idiotic in the extreme to still hold by the view it was ok to leave kids in this situation and they were not neglecting them.

First of all the word is wandered - not wondered (that means something else)....
Now to answer your question - I am not a McCann 'fan', but the thing about this whole situation and the condemnation that goes with it makes me sick. Ok, they shouldn't have left their kids alone, but come on.... they did. Now, can we just let that go please?? Can all of you stop being so judgemental and just focus on the ONE issue at stake here - that a little girl is gone and will, unfortunately, probably not be found alive. Nobody knows what goes on in someone else's head and especially not in this case - regardless of what you read in the papers/see on the news about how the McCanns are feeling. Who knows... maybe their media guy is telling them to say certain things to the journalists.
Just to reitirate... I don't condone leaving kids alone, but enough!!! I know a lot of people don't agree that they are paying the price now, but they are. Please, have a heart and leave them to grieve for the little girl they might never see again...
(Oh and for those of you who have signed that petition..... have a heart and let it go - please!!!!).

I want to share something with you regarding those who defend the McCanns. Or at least one that I know of. I had heard a news story today..I posted the link to the story and simply said when is child neglect going to stop. I never mentioned the McCanns at all and started getting freaked out on my a defender of the McCanns saying I was bashing them when in fact my comment was that this horrible incident where 5 children died in a fire and police were investigating because the babysitter story was conflicting and therefore it was possilble that the children were left alone while the parents went out. I got bashed so badly and you know what I was trying to get awareness out there of what else can happen when children are not properly taken care of and as I said I never brought up the McCanns. So frankly I am sick of them saying that we insult them and such. My post is on General news and events it says Is this awful...5 children die in fire? Check it out for proof that it is not just the anti Parent supporters insulting those with opinions. It did not bother me before today. I chose to ignore them but it really bothers me that 5 little children were killed today as a result of neglect likely and people dont seem to care a thing about it because I guess their social status.

Let's not forget that as yet no-one knows for sure what did happen to Madeleine that night - she may have wandered off through the patio doors her parents felt happy to leave open and have come to some harm, yet the reason for her disappearance has been accepted without question as an abduction. Whatever happened to that little girl is entirely the fault of her parents for not meeting their responsibilities. It has never been acceptable to leave such young children alone anywhere, let alone on a busy holiday complex, so I am deeply confused as to why the media feel it has suddenly become so. Since when was enjoying a meal and wine a valid reason for abandoning your children?

Children are precious. Did they leave other things that night, like their wallets, handbags, jewellery passports. Or were they in a safe?
The point is no matter how awful this all is, we would not be discussing it at all if they had been with their children.
I feel for them and hope Maddie is found safe but my sympathy is not as strong as it may have been had they been more responsible.
I am sorry others feel we are bad people for feeling a child was not taken care of.

no one deserves to loose a child, but at the same time we have to protect them as best we can .And leaving your children while you go and enjoy yourself having dinner seriously needs addressing and im afraid criticising. Me and my daughter went to Spain last year and we were due to go for dinner ,she felt unwell and said 'you go mum' I didn't go, i never for one minute thought to leave her .We had beans on toast in the apartment > My daughters 20 years old ! I'm not over protective nor am i a smothering mother.Just a mother who wouldn't leave her daughter in a strange country all alone, in an apartment , in an area that was unfamilier. Like you say, Any thing could have happened to them kids. there could have been a fire , one of them could have bitten a button off, and started to choke, sleepwalked, went of looking for mummy and daddy anything could have happened. And one thing that's making me feel quite sick is ,it seems to have turned into a rather badly tasting circus. People clapping the parents and cheering at them ,its quite sick i think.....I definitely don't defend the mccanns, i feel so sad for that beautiful Little girl . The mccanns should be made to realise that what they did leaving the children on their own was wrong,They seem to be unaware that they did anything wrong, They seem to be defending themselves.........

a lot of people lose their children through fundamental errors of their own how many people do you hear of where their child has wondered off into a pond and been found face down 5 minutes later and i dont think its a case of defending them but acknowledging yes they did wrong but i wouldnt wish this on anybody can you imagine the feeling that your little girl your baby could be lying somewhere dead waiting to be discovered or that some evil monster is using her to satisfy his urges ive imagined madleines pain and her tears i can only guess her parents have these images in their head 24/7 so to vilify them at this time is just awful just be thankful its not one of your own and think of the child
its sickening to read all of the stuff written about the mccanns the jokes the jibes and plain evil comments but barely anybody mentions the monster who took madeleine that night

While depending on what country you live in like for instance say you live a major urban US city (or watched too many episodes of america's most wanted) I can totally understand someone being outraged by someone leaving their kids to go eat BUT the vast majority of the civilized world is not very scary.
People leave their kids in hotel rooms to go eat, people don't have sophisticated alarms on their cars, they leave their front doors open. There are places in the world that are safe and nice and comfortable and I'm going to assume that the McCanns came from such a place.
How do you know the evil man can do if you've never seen it? If you're from some small town in some rural area how could you imagine something like that even kind of happening? If you've lived a sheltered life how can you be faulted or condemned for assuming that most people in the world aren't going to have the desire to do sick things to your kids...
I understand people who are upset with the McCanns, but possibly those people should also understand why the McCanns did what they did, it wasn't out of some unconcern for their kids it was just not understanding that the world is a scary place.
There is too much "people have to pay" attitude in America (and around the world from what I'm reading), if Maddy had gotten out and drowned I wouldn't have thought they were bad parents, accidents happen all of the time. I went out with a man who fell in a rushing (yellow) river in China as a little boy, had this happen in America his parents would be in jail for child abuse and he would have got to spend some time in foster care.
People also seem to be angry about the fact that they are well off, like having money makes you the devil. I'm not sure exactly what that is about. I know the economy is bad, but there is no need to make the McCanns the poster children for irresponsible wealth when there are people like Rupert Murdoch and George Bush to hate.
Why should humans be penalized for being human when some sick jerk takes advantage of that fact or a kid gets hurt because of it. There are parents that beat their kids, starve them, there is slavery going on...those are the bad guys, not some parents who went to dinner and had their little girl snatched.
