Got a mole on my arm. Dark brown, about 3.5mm...irregular borders and two colors. I've been told it's just a regular atypical mole. Just yesterday, though, I noticed a little bump on it. That area has always been a bit more raised than the rest of the mole, and it is the same color. I examine my mole every day as I am paranoid and only yesterday did I see this. What could this be? And what should I do? It'll be hard to get a doctor's appointment.

If you are continually worried about, then you should have it removed eventually to give you peace of mind. I had a mole once that had a little bump on it, it wasn't cancerous. I eventually had it removed because it was so ugly.

Who told you it was just a regular atypical mole? A doctor? If not then you need to see one, preferably a dermatologist. They are trained to spot questionable moles. I recently had one removed that turned out to be atypical and it was the kind that would have been a melanoma. They had to go back and remove some more tissue to be sure they got it all. I will be getting a check-up once a year from now on. My mom has had 3 melanomas removed. However, she is almost 88 so that shows that if you get them taken care of, they are curable. If your that worried (that you are checking it every day) then you really need to have a specialist look at it. Chances are it is fine but I say err on the side of caution. Talk to your parents about how much this is worrying you and see if they won't help you get an appointment. Good luck!

The following ABCDEs are important signs of moles that could be cancerous. If a mole displays any of the signs listed below, have it checked immediately by a dermatologist:

Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half
Border: The border or edges of the mole are ragged, blurred, or irregular
Color: The mole has different colors or it has shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white, or red
Diameter: The diameter of the mole is larger than the eraser of a pencil
Elevation: The mole appears elevated (raised from the skin)

Any mole that changes in color, texture or size should be considered dangerous until proven contrary.
Never, under any circumstances, pick at it or try to pull it off with your hands. As hard as it can be, get a doctor to see it, it's not life threatening, but something that has to be done.
