The FBI are a federal law enforcement agency. They are nationwide and are brought in for crimes that break federal laws, like bank robberies.

Local police are just that: local. They operate within a specific jurisdiction with local authority and supervision.

CSI is a subunit of a law enforcement agency. They are not a separate agency, just the specialists in crime scene investigation within an agency.

CIS can stand for a thousand things.

The primary difference between the FBI and local, other than one is federal and one not, the FBI is limited in jurisdiction on what it can arrest for.

The FBI has no authority to arrest for misdemeanors or other crimes that are not spelled out under the law! Those fall in the police department's jurisdiction that they are in. The State police can arrest state wide, the locals under their jurisdiction, which is usually a town. There are also Sheriff dept's that usually have county wide Jurisdiction!
