Yes they can...its in the paperwork you get when you ae hired. Check it out and if you don't have it anymore you can get the human resources dept to get you another copy. They have every right to take your pay down...sucks but its true.

not only that, they will get rid of you sooner or later, in general stepping down from a higher position, is an early sign of possible later dismissing.

Beware, save enough to pay bills till you get your next job

You would be taking a job with less (or at least different) responsibilities. Your employer has every right to pay a different amount for a different job.
