My sister recently gave me the most beautiful aquarium decoration I've ever seen, but I'm afraid that I might introduce something bad to my fishies if I put it in. Is there a way that I can clean it so it's totally safe? I have no idea who the previous owner was, so I have no idea what it has or doesn't have.

I don't have my fish yet. I want to get the aquarium totally functioning before I introduce them.

Thanks!

Yes, it was made for aquariums.

Yep warm water using salt on stubborn stains or dirt. You can also use bleach water 1/4 cup per gallon and scrub. Just remember to rinse well and use a different bowl or container with some of your dechlor in it to neutralize the bleach.

Good job on cycling the tank before you get the fish! Sounds like you are off on the right foot. Good luck

Was it something made specifically for aquarium use? If so, scrub it with hot water. If you're really worried about something bacterial on it you can use a very dilute bleach solution (1/20) but if you do this you need to rinse it super well afterwords, then soak it in a bucket of water with 5x the recommended amount of dechlorinator in it. Change the water in a few hours and add the 5x dechlorinator again. You want to make sure all the chlorine is neutralized.

If this is not something made for an aquarium I wouldn't use it since you do not know what will leach out of it over time.

If it was made for aquariums all you really need to do is wash it with warm water and a soft brush, like a new toothbrush. A little salt on the brush will help get rid of any stubborn spots and be totally safe for your tank as well.

Your sister must know you well, what a nice and thoughtful gift.

just plain water. if it has build up, a little brush will do the trick. let it soak for a week if you have any doubts. change the water once and it should be fine. chances are whatever was on it has died off.
