Sheffield is still a good player and no one said he was washed up but the problem was there wasn't anywhere to play him you had Abreu, Cabrera, Damon and Matsui as well so five outfeilders for 3 spots, then he couldn't DH because you had the baseclogger Giambi there which no one wanted to trade for so the moved Sheff for youngsters, watch out for Humberto Sanchez sometime next August ( He underwent Tommy John surgery but that is a good thing most pitchers come back better than before the kid is a 6ft6 power arm reeaching 98 on his fastball)
Randy Johnson was another problem, he never warmed up to New York, I think he rubbed his teamates the wrong way as well. He was horrible in the playoffs and coming off back surgery. He was moved for youngsters as well.
Clemens contract is prorated and he signed for 28 million but he is only being paid for the part of the season he will be on the major league roster. Clemens will be paid abnout 17.5 million for the season (I believe Johnson would have made 17 million this season if he was still with the Yankees he restructered his deal to go back to Arizona) so it was a wash in money.
What hurt the Yankees to begin with were the freak injuries to the pitching staff Pavano throws a lights out game againt the Twins and needs Tommy John surgery he is done for the duration of his Yankees contract, Jeff Karstens takes a liner off his shin and gets a broken leg, Rasner throws 6 pitches and takes a liner off his hand and breaks it, various hamstring injuries (Phil Hughes throwing a No hitter and he is one of 4 pitchers to pull a hamstring). Realize this at one point there were 3 rookies in the rotation (Chase Wright from AA ball, Kei Igawa, and Rasner) , Pettite and Mussina.
It wasn't a bad thing to get rid of Sheff and Johnson the thing that has helped the most is that Giambi is hurt and hopefully will get suspended for a long period of time, with him hurt it has helped the team to become more of what Torre likes to do hit and run, double steal, bunt, sacrifice play small ball instead of waiting for the three run homer.

Sheff and Abreu bring different things to the table. The Yankees should have plenty of power therefor it makes more sense to have someone who is more apt to have a high obp.
Johnson on the other hand did win 17 games last year but his era was 5.00. He simply could not handle the pressure of pitching in New York. Johnson also remains an injury risk after having back surgery last year. Clemens on the other hand has proven he can handle the atmosphere in New York. I find it very interesting that the week he comes back the Yanks go on a 7 game(and counting) winning streak.

What does it matter? NYY players are bought and sold like livestock. If one isn't working out ol' George just throws them away and buys another. The Yankees will never be as good on the field as they are on paper until they have an owner that makes decisions that are based on what is best for baseball instead of what is best for his pocket and his ego! The salary cap won't work when a team makes more money selling hats and shirts than some other teams make total. Fines aren't enough, taking away draft picks wouldn't hurt them either because they just buy players anyway. The rule would have to include forfeiting games until the team salary is back under the cap before GS would care.

I don't think it was a bad move. They are doing good right now but as soon as they get hurt then people will say the Yankees did the right thing. The Yankees wanted to go younger and fill there minors league with some Young arms and have them payoff later down the road.

No I thought getting Johnson was a bad idea in the first place. Aside from the fact that he's not a big city kind of guy, baseball history shows that when power pitchers stuff goes to hell it usually goes staight to hell.
The classic line of course is better to trade a player a year to early than a year to late
I'm really suprised that Abrieu stared off as bad as he did I know that he's a better ball player than what he's been showing. and I thought that getting him was a great idea-still do.

Johnson was okay, but Sheff is a team killer. Not a guy wanted in the locker room. After the comments he made bout Torre, and the team, I'm very glad he's gone.

johnson couldnt do it in a yankee uniform spotlight, there is no pressure for him in arizona!! i mean really who cares about the D BACKS! Sheff is a homer rbi guy which they have in arod and matsui and SUPPOSEDLY giambi, they chose to keep abreu who is a higher AVG hitter!
