Really...David Robinson went his entire career being called "soft." Until this year, the only time the Spurs weren't considered a "soft" team is when they had Dennis Rodman. Tim Duncan and company were not considered a "dirty" team until Amare Stoudamire started complaining after losses. Where is the evidence? A couple of inadvertent fouls by Bruce Bowen and a hard foul by Robert Horry? Almost overnight the Spurs went from being considered little girls to be the Wicked Witch of the West.

You got me. As Bill Simmons said in a column a couple of months ago "I don't believe the Spurs are even remotely boring, and anyone who says that doesn't actually like basketball." The Spurs don't play a slow-paced game, and they don't emphasize defense. They ranked fourth in points per game this season, and first in assists per game. They've been a high-powered offensive machine with lots of ball movement for several seasons now. No exciting players? Watching Tony Parker drive the lane through guys a foot taller isn't exciting? How about Manu? He's not fun to watch? The only thing boring about the Spurs is their lack of drama and drama queens. They don't thump their own chest every time they make a good play. They don't call each other out after a loss, they don't demand more playing time in the media. When the game is on the line they share the ball and look for the best possible shot, instead of spreading the floor and letting their star go one-one-one, hoping for the best.

Well said Birdman. The Spurs are a defensive team and great defense frustrates opposing teams. When you play awesome defense, fouls happen (although it doesn't excuse the hard ones like Horry had against Nash). That's it, other teams just need to deal with it. Defense wins games and championships. The Spurs are just a fundamental b-ball team, not "soft" or "dirty".

I completely agree...when did it become the norm to score a 120 points and still lose? Todays game is based on defense! ARE YOU LISTENING SUNS??? Its not concidential that 2 top five defensive teams are in the finals! When you have players like Nash and da mop head guy from the Cavs flopping all over the place things tend to look worse than they are. Ask any REAL ball player and they'll tell you they dont shy away from contact! the AVERAGE FAN has become obsessed with the frantic and unorganized chaos that is the NBA now. It takes a fan to fully understand the game of bball! Take in game 2 when Horry dove to the free throw line and made a back door touch bounce pass to Duncan

Really good question. I found myself asking the same thing. I was like, first they're the milk and cookies team, now they're the reigning bad boys of the NBA?! You're right though, it all started when Stoudemire, the coach and the whining Suns fans started crying and saying that the Spurs were "dirty, dirty, dirty!" Whatev. Like they're saints? The best part is that they're STILL complaining about it! It's been what, a month? They need to go on with their pathetic lives. The Spurs are about as dirty as Shirley Temple...but they're still kicking everyone's asses!

They're not a dirty team. The Finals this year are boring, and some reporters are trying to bring some life into it. A few questionable fouls do NOT make the Spurs a dirty team. They are still as textbook and soft as ever.

the spurs play great defense and in the nba great defense sometimes means to get a little gritty and cheap and dirty...if it stops the other team then thats what you gotta do so thats what the spurs do

That was just a message sent this year to the league that they were not going to be pushed around in the playoffs this year. It's not their true style of game.

Bruce Bowen and Robert Horry led them to be "dirty".
