I know that the Nascar has been trying real hard to reach out to the black and Latino markets, and its not coz they think its the right thing to do, its coz blacks and latinos can add tens of millionms to their bottom lines with all the merchandising and tickets etc. No their problem is not that nascar is rasict, its just that most nascar fans are not real big fans of colored folk. Once talking to this nascar fan about black drivers, I asked how come there werent any in the league to which he replied and I quote "boy do you know how many nascar fans are registered with the NRA?" Further discussions revealed that he believed that
1. Nascar is the biggest sport in america
2. Its the only sport in america that the white have left
3. All others have been taken over by colored folk (Hokey is not very prominent in the south)
4. Any time the laker win the black folk riot in LA and thus the same will happen all over the south
5. When ever there are big groups of black folk gathered there always will be crime.
6. Maybe the blacks should leave Nascar be coz this way white folks can be (I'm not making this up) comfortable.
Now I'm NOT white or black but I would be considered "colored" and have been to a few Nascar games, Ive tailgated out side and while most white folk dont make an effort to come talk to me, I have never had any problems. I've shared beers and food with them be it mine or theirs, but that all came about after I put out my offer of beer/BBQ first. It should be considered that all the events I've been to were in Texas where people are a bit more friendly (at least to the face) and I've lived in the black ghettos of Dallas (South Oakcliff) and I've lived out in the country so I can move about any line without problem.

No. NASCAR is actually trying very hard to expand its fan base to the African-American community. NASCAR has instituted a diversity program and is funding several racing schools that target young African-Americans. An African-American driver Bill Lester is a regular on the NASCAR Craftsman truck series and last year qualified for a Nextel Cup race.
One problem facing upcoming African-American drivers is the fact that running a NASCAR team requires a lot of money through sponsorships and most of the major sponsors are committed to other drivers. It would help if a successful African-American business man, like BET's Bob Johnson, would step up and sponsor a driver like Bill Lester.
Another problem is NASCAR's persistent image as being a white southerners only sport, which is changing slowly.

That is one very expensive sport and requires sponsors with deep pockets. There are some fat cats in the black community who love nascar, but they need to step up too and give a nod to some of the great young black drivers who just want a chance to prove themselves. No doubt there are some excellent drivers but someone needs to pony up and give them a break.

Blacks choose not to participate in NASCAR. Not because NASCAR is racist. People say the same about hockey, but it's not because the associations are racist.
