what do i need to do with my computer for it to show the actual speed of my internet connection?

There are websites that will test the speed of your connection, some examples are:
http://www.speedtest.net/
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/
Or just search for "broadband speed test".

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and run the test with the different server, for the best results, use the server nearest you. You can test with any server and it will make a chart for you. It tests uploads and downloads speed.

Go to http://www.testmy.net/ . You can do a speed test. It is pretty accurate as well. You can also run your pc through the test at http://www.pcpitstop.com/ . That will put your PC through some test and give you recommendations on how to fix it.
