i think you are absolutely correct.
when you look at his impact on westerns and cop films (when i first started paying real attention to him) and then his later works when he started directing, you can see the wide range of his material.
he is an obvious example of someone who paid attention in his earlier career as an actor and used that knowledge to turn himself into a top-notch director.
i can remember him being in Rawhide (TV) and then moving on to Man With No Name movies, and Dirty Harrys. i just watched Play Misty for Me last evening.
in terms of having an all-around career in the business, i can't think of anyone who has been so prolific and had such an impact, not only in his action films but in "serious" films such as Mystic River (which i think is his best directorial work to date), Million Dollar Baby, Bird, Honkytonk Man and the two recent war films.
and he's still around so there is likely to be more.

I know I won't get picked for best answer on this one. But I personally think that Clint is soooo overrated. He was fine to look at years ago, but now, he is just an old man who really can't act that well. He is a good director though. I think Jack Nicholson is much better, also, Gene Hackman-who by far outshines Clint, Heck, even John Wayne can out do Eastwood by a mile, and he's been dead for years.

But I liked Bronco Billy.
Anyway I'd have to say that Kevin Bacon has had a better film career. They guy is in just about every movie ever made.

Michael caine is right up there too. plus he is still believable in different roles whereas Clint is not because he isn't aging very well. he can only play the really old guy who's all wise and stuff. he doing more directing than acting now too.
