Im not a scientist and don't have a genius sounding answer but the answer is because empty space cannot light up. when you turn a light on in a dark room it is not the air and empty space that is lit, it is the objects that reflect that light.

Why do we not have strong light at night? other than the moon that reflects a decent amount of light, the stars and the planet bodies are to far away and cumulatively do not reflect a large amount of light as compared to the close burning star in our own solar system.

The gas molecules in our atmosphere scatter some of the light coming from the sun, and thus the entire sky is lit up. On the Moon, where there is no atmosphere, the sky is black. Space doesn't have enough gas particles to scatter the light. That's why it is often called "empty" space.

Try an experiment. Take a flashlight to a big field Take 5 steps away from where you have put the flashlight. and take note of it's size and brilliance. Do this a few times by increments of five spaces each time.

First, stars are millions of miles apart.

Also, the reason we can see things is that light bounces off of them. In space, there's nothing for the light to bounce off of.
