Normally, when I start the vehicle, the light turns on momentarily and then turns off. Now, though, it stays on. The brake light indicator isn't on though.

Your ABS (anti-locking brake system) valve has failed, you probably need to replace the valve. Have someone run the on-board diagnostic codes, maybe it's a sensor in on of the wheels. Otherwise, it's the valve. They are a little pricey, but not too bad.

It means there is a fault detected in the abs system. Normally, when you key on, the bulb comes on for a bulb test, then goes out. If there is a fault detected in the system, the abs light will remain on until it is either cleared by using a bi-directional scan tool, or the vehicle is drives so many drive cycles without the fault duplicating. Any reputable repair shop will be able to retrieve any diagnostic fault codes stored in the ebcm(electronic brake control module) and give you an estimate for the repairs. Even though the abs light stays on, as long as the red brake warning light is not on, you will still have base brakes. The abs system will be disabled. The problem could be anything from a wheel speed sensor or harness(relatively inexpensive) to a EHCU(electro hydraulic control unit) which is very expensive, to low system voltage from a weak battery or alternator. One of the first systems to be disabled from a weak battery or alternator is the abs system because the abs pump motor has a high current draw when it is activated. If you are worried about not having abs, I would get it checked out as soon as possible. If not, you'll still continue to have brakes.

I agree with with sexy babe's answer the most. The most common cause for the ABS light to illuminate on Explorers is when the rear speed sensor fails. And, as sexy babe advises, it's a pretty simple job, so you shouldn't be charged too much labour to replace, if you choose to have a mechanic replace it. Just make sure to have it DIAGNOSED, first before you authorize the replacement of any parts. Hope this helps.

something has failed in the ABS system and the light is warning you that the system has been de-activated. as long as the red brake light isn't also on it should be safe to drive till you can get a mechanic to look at it. the concern could be as simple as a broken wire or bad sensor. either way is best to have it diagnosed to find out for sure.

When mine did that my son changed the brake calibrators out and it stayed off. Might be something like that. You can have it checked for free at Brake Check.

check your brake fluid level, it may be low, causing your light to come on.

more than likely you have a bad wheel speed sensor on one of your wheels or a broken wire to one of them.
