At 4000K, the centers of sunspots should only be 7 or 8 times darker than the sun. That doesn't seem like alot.

Are the umbras really cooler than 4000K, or is the dynamic range that narrow?

Also, they tend to expose the photosphere only to medium brightness, reducing available dynamic range further.

The speed of nuclear fusion reactions is highly temperature dependent. However I am not familiar with the exact relationship.

Are the photo's enhanced at all? How long is the exposure?

Exposing on the hotter area gives the impression of darkness at the spots. Vivually, they look the same
