I don't know, but that's my response to the question of "why" many times. It is very effective.

It might be true, if it was a novel answer from a stellar student!

I have had an instructor who'd ask "why?" on a final. Firstly, it would be in Spanish. Behavioral Science students would be judged most harshly, Spanish students could write anything, starting with Porque, por que, porque or porgue...it better be a really good sentence!

If one wrote a philosophical answer, in Espanol, addressing behavioral issues - SCORE!

He would never let the rest of the world see it, know it, or anything else!

Basically, a few "right" words, if you had attended class, participated, helped others, thought for yourself, volunteered...and your instructor thinks you're perfect for a BS degree...in other words, the instructor already knows.

Yep, it's possible. I've had to write essays from novel ideas and strange questions.

Thank God for small schools and innovative instructors!

I know (because I'm old) that the story has been around since at least the early 1970s, always constantly updated, sometimes with specific prof. and university names attached, sometimes not.

Typical urban legend stuff. If anyone DID ask that question, the whole class would write "Why not" expecting an A because everyone has heard the story!

It is an urban ledgend. It's an old idea, that philosophy graduates like myslef wish were true. No matter how much work you put in, in the end its possible to pass with the minimal amount of effort, providing your quick witted. There has NEVER, repeat NEVER been a one word exam where it was possible to pass answering with one word back.
Even if there was, I certainly would never attend the University. Philosophy is greek for the 'love of wisdom', not clever remarks.
& before people go off on one, it's not wise to retort with a one word answer. All it shows is you havn't learnt anything & wasted thousand so of pounds worth of tutition fees.

& i honestly can't believe Dea Y is stating her 'friend' did similar in a test.

need proof?

Seems our Dea Y here's friend is a liar, that or Dea Y is attributing the old, "It must be true, i heard it from my friend, who heard it from his friend, who heard it from a reliable sources uncle's nephew"...

I don`t do philosophy yet, (only at highschool in 11th grade - now entering :P) but I read philosophy at home and this is just a myth for sure. And a essay about "why" or any single word is not normal, you have to have a hole proposition at least to comment on it. As well your essay must have logical arguments.

I have bachelors and masters degree in philosophy, and never once was I given an exam with the question Why?... Not only does this seem like an urban legend, but it's completely non-sensical.

I don't know about that one, but I had a friend who answered a complex question in a Phil. class, with this: "It's all metaphysical!" He got an "A".

He was taking a painting class, too. (He's an artist), and he had 12 canvases due at the end of the term. The night before the class was to bring all completed canvases the instructor hadn't seen to the class for grading, he painted 12 one inch squares different shades of green. He carried them in his pocket. When the instructor said "________, I haven't seen anything at all from you all term," he produced the 12 1" squares, arranged them, and got an "A" in that class!

Amazing dude! (But it WAS the 60s.....)

True or not, it reflects a very mature thinking. Of course after the incident there were no others ... this is only a one-time joke in history ...lol

my friend Mike had to do his final exam for psychology.

the test was one question "What is Courage?"

he had two hours to write it.

30 seconds after opening his test book he handed it in. the professor laughed as he handed it in. i was like "he's soooo going to fail" took me an hour and a half to write mine. in the hall after class i asked him what he wrote

he said "this is courage"

damned if he didnt get an A on that paper i on the other hand got a respectable B+
