NBA Worst: Worst Defensive Player?

The nominations are in. Here are the tops for defensive ineptitude:

This question is pretty tough, especially considering you have 2 players on the list who's biggest priority is not defense. Steve Nash's # 1 priority is to generate the offense for the Suns while Ed Curry's main focus is to score inside for the Knicks. I wouldn't consider Yao Ming are part of this pack because he does block shots (averages 2 a game) and anchors the middle for the Rockets.

In order to analyze this dilema, I would have to look at the team's overall performance on offense and defense. The Suns score an average of 110.2 points per game while giving up 102.9 points per game. The Knicks score an average of 97.5 points per game giving up 100.3 points per game. Phoenix beat their opponents by an average of 7.3 per game (2nd best in the NBA) while New York loses to their opponents by an average of 2.8 (or -2.8) points per game. Anytime you beat teams by an average of 7 points a game then you must be playing good team defense and that means everyone has to contribute in order to be effective. In contrast, if you're losing to teams by almost 3 points a game, that could either mean you're not scoring enough or you are not capable of stopping your opponent on defense.

Just basing on statistics alone, I would have to concur that Ed Curry is the Worst Defensive Player out of this bunch. Being a center, defense should be one of the main priorities. It is their job to control the paint and anchor the middle. The fact that Curry averages half a block (0.5) and 7.1 rebounds a game is not acceptable for a guy his size (6-10, 285 pounds). The NBA average, in terms of blocks for a center is 0.9 a game and Eddy fails to produce at the minimal level of expectation.

The one downside to Nash's defensive capabilities is the fact that he averages less than a steal (0.8) a game for a guard. As unacceptable as it may seem, the league average, in terms of steals for a guard is 0.8 a game so he is operating at the minimal level. Nash averaging more steals than Curry getting blocks or steals proves that Steve is more willing to move his feet and work on defense. It also shows that Eddy would rather handcuff his feet to the floor instead of making a conscious effort to stop his opponent from scoring. Therefore, I shall nominate Eddy Curry for the Worst Defensive Player Award.

I'd definetly have to say Eddy Curry because even though he has help from Stephon and others, he didn't do much for the Knicks this season. Yao came off an injury and was still performing like an All-Star. Steve Nash was an MVP candidate and even though he's a point guard, he still got better defense than Eddy.
