Jo said that it is important to the plot. She also said that everyone asks about Harry's line and if he is related to Godric Gryffindor and she said possibly. I was wondering if that was something owned by Gryffindor that Voldemort wanted to turn into a horcrux. What are your thoughts?

I do know that the sword is the only known thing from Gryffindor, but maybe Dumbledore doesn't know. That will be the only way it would be possible, is that Dumbledore didn't know it was Gryffindore's.

This is about something that is in the first book, Jame's death ("before he died")

I don't think it is a horcrux, my theory was that he wanted to turn it into one

I suppose I have to dismiss it :( because I don't think Dumbledore realized the horcrux thing was for real until the Journal. darn, what else could it be, why wouldn't he use it?

There isn't a spoiler here, anyone that likes Harry Potter has at least read some of the books and maybe seen the movies. It is a no brainer that Harry is raised by his aunt and uncle because his parent's died. Read the question before thinking I am spoiling something different, and get over your self (only addressed to miss negative ratings below)

I have a theory that maybe James and Lily knew about the prophecy. So James would have known that he was going to have to die to save Harry (in order for Lily to confront Voldemort on her own, since only Lily's love could save him). In the book it said that he told Lily to "take Harry and run" or something like that. He gave Dumbledore the cloak so he could pass it on to Harry, knowing that he'd need it in the future on his quest to kill Voldemort.

I think Dumbledore said that the only known remaining artifact of Gryffindor's was the sword. Good thought though!

EDIT: But if the reason James gave it to Dumbledore was because Voldemort was after it, he would have told Dumbledore. Dumbledore would have definitely told Harry if he knew something like that about it. I think it has more do with James' past than anything.

Sorry - that's what I meant. But remember that Dumbledore only recently found about the horcruxes. I just think he would have told Harry if he thought it had any kind of significance.

I could be wrong though, I guess we'll find out in July. Send me an email if you're interested in sharing theories! :)

That is a great question!!! I hope it is answered in DH.

If I had to guess, Voldemort knew about the cloak and equipped his Deatheaters with some sort of means to detect him. Thus he gave it to Dumbledore until Voldemort was defeated.

BTW, I don't think it is a horcrux. Dumbledore said the only known possessions of Gryffindor were in Hogwarts--the sword and the hat (at least according to the hat).
