OK.. wireless works ANYWHERE that a transmitting node is set up (generally a router). It does not have to be YOUR system as long as it is either unprotected (open) or you have the security code/authorization.
There are many places in the US that offer free wireless. Most large hotel chains, some Cities in public squares, heck even our local bus and rapid transit systems now have free wireless in them (Oakland / San Francisco Bay area). Virtually all airports of any size now have it in some form
All you need is a laptop (or desktop with a realllllly long extension cord - grin) that is wireless enabled.
In mexico the same conditions apply. If you find a free node you can simply start using it (although some of the initial screen or logon may be in spanish). Many condos and timeshares have wireless available - some may charge you for a daily or weekly access.
If you are traveling like that I recommend a handy tool from Belkin. It is a wireless detector. Its about the size of a cigarette lighter and will tell you when you are within the range of a wireless system and I think it also tells you if it is a secure or an open system. Runs about $20 to $30 and saves having to fire up your laptop each time.
Lastly, in mexico you will always find Internet stations where you can go in and rent a computer with its hookup. They will run you anywhere from $2 to $10 an hour, so don't worry about getting your mail.
If you go that route DO remember to log off from any program that you open or the next person will have access to your accounts..

ca_surveyor has the best answer here. There are many, many places in Mexico where you will find wireless "hot spots" to tap into for free or a small fee. In San Miguel de Allende, part of the main town square, the Jardin, is a hotspot. Just sit on a bench, open your laptop and you're good to go. The patio of the Biblioteca (library) is another. I imagine many other towns are the same.
Many internet cafes (which you find everywhere in Mexico) have hotspots you can use just like Starbucks does here. If they don't have wireless, they will often let you plug into their system and work on your own computer there.
Mexico is a very wired country. You won't have any trouble getting online.

Your wireless internet only works in your home or 25ft away from your home, it doesnt work everywhere. Sometime you can grab someone elses signal, if they dont have it locked then you can connect to it unsafely.
You can also buy a wireless card with you cell phone company and you should be able to connect in Mexico, I know sprint has that service, you buy the card and i believe you pay monthy and it works anywhere, just need to find out if it works in Mexico.

wireless internet works in your house... and maybe in your yard... it doesn't work wherever you go... so no, unless you find someone with wifi in their house or a hotel/business with wifi for their customers, it will not work in mexico
