Don't PC's have a sleep mode that parks the hard drive and puts the machine to sleep?
On a Mac, just put it to sleep, and you're good to go. It just sleeps, no heat, no processing, no hard drive running until I hit the space-bar. Uses no more electricity then a nightlight. They're designed to run 24/7, and probably so are most PC's.
The more times you restart any computer, the more wear and tear it suffers from the hard drive to the motherboard (electrical spikes).

I leave my Mac in sleep mode overnight/during the day when I'm away if I have important stuff up, otherwise when I'm gone for the weekend or on vacation its off, its only on or asleep when I need it.
I do leave my Dell on as much as I possibly can, only because its a pain in the butt and takes an hour to work properly when its first started up =P

You should get another computer guy. Nightly reboots of your PC is perfectly fine, and actually keeps your applications and processes running better.
Leaving it on for no reason makes no sense.
I've been shutting down my PC nightly and it's running like a Derby winner.
Most network administrators implement an "Lights Out" policy, which shuts all the PC's down nightly at a given time.

the truth is, as long as your not turning it on and off ALL of the time (like multiple times a day) its okay to go ahead and turn it off... once upon a time it was true that leaving it on was better because startup was hard on them... but now days its not really the case... besides, turning it off (or using the hibernate function) will save you some electricity too

Don't turn it off every night or it will shorten the life of the hardware in side. It should be fine if you turn it off for the night once or twice a week.

you can turn it off when you go to sleep. i turn it off when i go to sleep on the weekdays and leave in on all day and night on the weekends. it really doesnt hurt to leave it on all the time. you should turn it off every 5-7 days to clear out the virtual memory and RAM and to give it a little rest and you dont need to keep it off long. 2 minutes is long enough.

Whilst booting up and shutting down DOES cause hard drive wear, I don't leave mine on overnight. It's a waste of electricity like anything else left on standby and is costing you and our environment.
And there's the fire risk hazard!

never..your computer takes 200 volts to run but when you power it on you shoot 1000 volts thru it ...and then it levels out at 200..so everyday you are sending this huge power surge thru it and wearing it out...
but...if you leave it on all night and all day for 3 years..its on when you don't need it so you are wearing it out too..hehe
