Honest politicians - is there such a thing??

I'm a journalist, and I can tell you that YES, there are honest politicians out there.
It's certainly true that an awful lot of our public officals are corrupted by the process -- the lobbying, the need to raise campaign funds, the shadowy alliances, etc. -- but there are plenty who are genuinely trying to do what they think is best. They tend not to achieve much or rise very far, because the system is stacked against straight-shooters, but good ones do exist. Not saints, to be sure, but genuinely decent public servants.

It's our job as voters to notice them and elect them instead of sending back the same SOBs year after year. In an average Congressional election, more than 90 percent of incumbents seeking re-election will win. That part is the peoples' responsibility.

(Example: In 1994, George Nethercutt was elected to the House of Representatives from the state of Washington, largely on a promise to serve only six years. In 2000, when the time was up, he went back on his word. The voters re-elected him anyway. Three more times. Whose fault is that?)

If there is it's probably only in the very lowest levels of government where there is a low demand for their services thus less bribes .
