wooden wick candles are wonderful and you even get the crackle of the wood as it burns. they smell wonderful and last a long time.
yankee candles are very good as well, and home interior.
I dont like the plug in ones, but if you go that route get something that smells natural like apple pie or cinnamon or a rich fruit like raspberries or peaches. its all up to you.

I love the air wick plug-in's I also like the glade pug ins. They both have different fragrances to choose from and you can adjust the strength of the scent. For a temporary change of scent I like to use the Yankee candles tarts. They are great when you are having company or are setting the mood for a special night. Good luck with your choices.

Bath and Body Works usually has great candles and right now THEY'RE HAVING A BIG SALE on candles! Henri Bendel, etc are on sale.
Also, get an electric candle warmer - they work with candles in jars and will melt the wax, giving a lot of fragrance throw. Normally they're pretty cheap, too. I see them at craft and hobby places for about $4.

Home Interiors has long burning candles that put off very little soot and smell like the real thing.

Put some spices or herbs (cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, etc, or some sage and lavender) in a small pan of water and simmer (don't boil!) gently on the stove.

Check out www.thymes.com. Their air fresheners are naturals, (basil, eucalyptus, etc) and although expensive at around $20 a can, they are wonderful, you use very little and it lasts and lasts. . .
