You should'nt have to. If you use it online it will tell you that some updates are being installed. I have a laptop that has Norton internet security 2006 it updates when I go on line.

Please dont, you may regret it, the latest version is slow as hell, I just fixing a PC now with Norton 2007 on it, its slow, and using another virus scanner, it finds a virus within 5 mins while Norton is sitting there with a huge green tick, indicating the PC is safe and protected.
Use something else.

just go ahead and renew it it may make it easier if you still have your old referance number from the last time you updated but if you havent dont worry norton is great for guiding you through the process

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
